Topic gas heating

Tips .
Insulate your loft and check you walls are insulated there are Scottish government grants for this .
Doing that makes your heating system more economical as you start to keep more heat in.

Fix draughty leaks in your home .

Install thermostic valves on your radiators.
If they are over 20 years change them .

Service your boiler regularly..

After the spring and summer it's always worth taking the thermostatic head off and give the pin a we oil and push it in and let it out do this about 20 times if the thermostatic pin doesn't move down it's stuck and the valve won't shut once the room reaches temperature.

Always check your CO2 monitor once a week to check the alarm still works by pressing the alarm button.

Check your gas cooker that it has been chained so it doesn't fall towards you because if it's not chained and a kid climbs up whilst you are cooking and not in the kitchen the cooker can cause many problems on the fall back to the kid and could also break a gas joint behind the cooker .

Gas cookers should also have a CO2 detector.

On to gas fires they  are another problem if it's more than 7kw you need DIRECT air from outside and into the room non restricted meaning you can't close that vent .

Sometimes when people get double glazing the glazier's put vents on the windows but they have shut off vents .
If that's the only vent into the room then you have an illegal working appliance .
Again a gas fire requires a CO2 detector and a yearly service .

many people have an old heating  system if you need to change the boiler then I would suggest to change the radiators if they are over 30 years old .

If you don't you will have an H/E boiler  ( high efficiency) and radiators not matching the efficiency heat of the boiler.

Hope this can help some of you on here.

Best thing to do is fit a smart radiator valve system.
Major energy saving.

Fair enough but there's a lot of people who can hardly afford to change their boiler .
I suppose it's down to what the person can afford .
These smart stuff cost a bit more but the more technical you go with gas heating installs not many of the older generation can understand them .

But the young today are switched on so yes it would be worth speaking about .

The older generation don't have access to internet stuff and when they do like me I'm kinda lost .

I think it's about not just surveying the house but seeing it from a perspective of the home owner .

No need to change boiler to fit a smart system.

Combi boilers have come a long way since the 80s and the massive amount of breakdowns.
I quite like the Alpha boiler range . I installed one in my new house last year .
Very reliable.plus a 7 year guarantee. As long as a magnaclean is fitted very good for picking up any debris that's going around the system .

Only good thing about Alpha boilers is they’re cheap.

Cheap but very good .
Another tip is to make sure your flue meets regulations.

It's mental the amount of flues that don't meet regulation's.

Which? verdict: A bit below average
Alpha boilers aren’t up to scratch when compared with other boiler brands on the market. Its reliability is average, as is its customer score. Heating engineers also tend to think its average on nearly every metric, other than whether the engineer is likely to recommend the brand, where Alpha comes out below average. You can read the more detailed views of heating engineers on the Alpha brand in the section below. If you’re considering a boiler from this brand, it’s worth checking our best boiler brands page to make sure you get a boiler from one of the best boiler manufacturers around.
Pros
Tend to be less expensive than some brands
Cons
No serious cons
But not much to write home about either
Alpha is average across the board.

My company installed thousands of Alpha combi bolers I must say over the years we have had very little problems with them .

The big seller for me is the service company that fixes any problems are in Aberdeen they are quick and know what they are doing Aberdeen boiler services in the bridge of Don .
That's another point to take in if something goes wrong with the boiler who  does the breakdowns for them .
Peace of mind for me knowing the customer doesn't have to freeze for 3 days without heating especially the older generation because the back up is right next door.
I also know the lads which of course helps.
