These nets have been up for months...
« on: August 30, 2020, 10:50:53 am »

But me and my kids are the only people I’ve ever known to use them. If we had a goal with nets back in the day we would have done nothing else.

Its sad but most kids stay in playing their computer games. In my day you couldn't get me back in the house. Loved being outside playing football, tennis, kerbie etc...
There is a couple of nets down by my local academy and to be fair they get used quite a lot.

In my childhood, a set of nets would have been a natural gathering point for children of a young age to get to know each other.  They were also a great leveller with family backgrounds going completely out the window.  Some of my closest friendships were forged through such an environment.

The only thing children would judge each other on was how good they were at football! A great way for kids to grow up IMO.  If a boy's dad didn't like football, then the child would get into it from running around with their mates.

I recall we'd be desperate for it to rain because it was a great laugh sliding about trying to play football in the mud.  Did that make us weirdos? Maybe so lol.

It's a real shame that there don't appear to be more children doing the same as yours Peter.  Is that a local park?

Are you sure the goals have only been there for months?  If so, were they salvaged from a skip? Lol

Just the nets are new. Goalposts are ten a penny, but goals with nets! Wow that would have brought all the kids to the yard.

Just a local patch of grass with one set of goals.

I see what you mean.  Good point.  I can't ever remember there ever being goals with nets growing up!

Used to have a net of my own, think it was actually some kind of old fishing net or something.

Used to tie it to a couple of trees then used string to tie it to a tree behind and make a boxed net like the Italia 90 goals.

Up until then we'd only ever seen nets held up by stanchions and it looked so much better the way the ball hit it with boxed nets.

I just turned 40 a few months ago. Our oldest poster is probably the Ibrox stalwart ImTheBoy, who is in his early 70s.

I'm afraid that at 36 I am a sprightly young thing.. relatively speaking of course!  :)

My general views in life lead many to believe that I must be about 80 though!

He’s a racist attention seeker.

Hates alcoholics and wife beaters, but has username after Ralph Milne.

A very confused old man.
I post, the dafties always dive right in!

But me and my kids are the only people I’ve ever known to use them. If we had a goal with nets back in the day we would have done nothing else.

When we were kids, we found an old discarded set of nets in our field, from one of the teams that played there.

Closer to our house had a row of big trees, about the right width for a set of goals.

We took a hammer and some nails, and put nails in the back of both trees and bent them to form hooks, we used to hook the nets on the tree every night and play for hours.

the goalmouth between the trees was really uneven, so we took spades out, dug it up, kept the turf and evened it out, then put the turf back down.

I even stole grass seeds from my dads shed and put them down.

We had a cracking little area to play footy, as soon as everyone found out we had nets, they wanted to join in.  ;D

Good times.

Aye he's on the wind up most of the time .
But I'm not too keen on the racist part of him again it could be to wind up fellow posters .
