Wages and rights are better than at any time in history. Some rights were rolled back under Theresa May but still. The main problem is the cost of living and inadequate provisions such as state pensions.

As for flat screen TVs, is this really still the metaphor for people living beyond their means? What other kind of TVs are available? Or should less affluent people just not have TVs?

Flat screen TVs are not even expensive anymore. It’s about £300 for a 50”. I bought my Samsung in 2008 and it’s still fantastic 12 years later.

The idea that the least well off shouldn’t have the basics of modern living is all about keeping people down, when we should be encouraging people up.

No worries, I must have picked you up wrongly. What did you mean about the flat screen TVs?

Quite as simple as it read Peter.I meant folk in factories who can’t get above minimum wage due to the fact either they can be replaced easily by foreign labour who would think its a great wage or are frightened to death of having their jobs relocated abroad . They can then watch their TV. Knowing it is cheaper because it was imported.
If we are living in the best era for wages etc do you congratulate the Tories over this achievement?

Overseas labour stopped coming here in any numbers long before Brexit because economic conditions in countries like Poland improved so there was no point.

At the same time people from the UK lived and worked all over Europe and the UK employment market had the lowest level of unemployment in history.

Pay in the UK has never been higher in one sense but in relation to the cost of living it is lower than it has ever been. Overall standard of living is better than it was 30 years ago and that is to be expected. On quality of living the UK has not kept pace with other comparable and smaller nations.

I don’t understand what the TV is meant to symbolise or why there is always so much focus on whether the poorest in society might have too much for the tastes of the less poor. If they do, good for them I say.
