What a fascinating man he was. Of Scottish ancestry, Dublin-born Carson was a successful barrister but also a staunch Unionist.
On 28th September 1912 (Ulster Day) he was the first signatory of the Ulster Covenant, to resist the approaching Home Rule by any means necessary. Nearly half a million people signed the covenant in total.
He was able to smuggle over guns and raise/train the original UVF in plain sight, as legally you were allowed to forcefully resist the eroding of any part of the Empire. His army were ready to fight and the government sh@t it, backing down from the Home Rule Plan, with the UVF then being renamed the 36th Ulster Division and playing a huge role in the 1st world war.
This grand and imposing statue outside Stormont, looking down Prince of Wales Avenue, is definitely worth a visit. Hardliner has made the trip and it is wonderful to look at. There are also nice wooded paths and trails around the building.
