Thinking of installing an oil heating system
« on: September 14, 2020, 08:41:43 am »
There's no gas where I live, so a multi-fuel stove feeds the heaters.  Great when it gets going, but it's a pain in the arse to empty the tray, fill up with coal, keep topped up etc.

I'm unsure of whether we'd need to replace our boiler or not.  It's a big old thing that heats the water, with the stove heat also heating the water when it's on.

Do any of you guys have any sort of idea how much this could be?  We'll need an oil tank, possibly a new boiler and I'm not sure what else.

Buc is an expert in this field. I have an oil tank and oil run boiler and it’s fine. Oil is also very cheap just now.

I think I if I had the choice again though I’d maybe go for a ground or air source heat pump and there are good grants for those.

In an independent Scotland oil will be free to those who voted for it.

You wonder how the gardening wing of the SNP would feel with them going absolutely nuts with the oil in a separate Scotland.

Anyway, beter not say too much in that regard as I'm hoping for a nice reply from Buc!  :)

I'd be looking at ground source .
But oil heating is as a good as gas probably cheaper not sure how big your house is as in room sizes ceiling heights windows and outside walls all come into sizing up radiators on the chart .
The boiler size will differ according to in old money cos I'm an old git BTUs British thermo units as opposed to KW.

The bigger the boiler the bigger the price radiator sizes pipework sizes  and lagging all come into it.

Some heating engineers don't have the appropriate tickets for oil boilers that's another course .
So be careful and check out the appropriate site who will have recognised installers .

Thank you for taking time to read good advice if you were nearby I'd have come to your home and gave you good advice .

But I wouldn't take on a full heating job I just do the odd boiler change which takes one day's work .

Too old for all this hard work these days .
