I don't think him or anyone claims he's a historian, but what's he said wrong about the clearances?

He is an absolute gem of a man.

See Neil Oliver and diamonds?  One and the same.
He has often claimed to be a historian and still does so on his website, though his twitter says he isn’t one.

His friendly Yoon media often present him as being a historian.

His take that the Clearances weren’t in fact clearances but people shipping off for a bit of adventure and derring-do is a bit of an outlier.

I’ve only ever heard him on the radio but he seems to talk a lot of sense.

His twitter now makes clear he is not, after having been called out on it by historians. He must have forgotten to update his website.

Has he been called out lol?  I'd love to see the context of this, as well as the 'false' highland clearances claims.  I believe Neil Oliver to be a man of integrity.

The amount of articles dedicated to Neil Oliver in 'The National' is incredible!

Yeah, it’s a bit of a twitter rabbit hole and I’m sure he has deleted a few tweets, but he was challenged about his claims of being a historian and subsequently changed his Twitter. His website still says it though.

My brother in law (the good one) shared a flat with him when they were at university. Is still in touch with him and says he is a very intelligent guy that is easy to get on with. He really likes him, thats good enough for me.

It sounds to me like he's a qualified archeologist, but also a historian in the very sense of the word.

He knows loads about, and is most likely obsessed with, history.  When he is fronting historical programmes and bringing out history books, I think it's fair that he calls himself a historian.

He probably just dropped the tag on Twitter because those poor, downtrodden, fine, upstanding, virtuous Nats were making a huge deal out of his lack of a qualification and making him out to be some sort of fraud.

No wonder he's against Scottish Nationalism when it produces those who conduct these attacks.  The articles about him in The National are pretty obsessive.

What did he say about the clearances that was wrong?

Also, what other historians have called him out?

Struggling to remember all the details but here’s his twitter header.

On the clearances, he goes against every actual historian and claims there weren’t really any clearances but instead highlanders left by themselves in search of adventure.

Mmmh.  I'd need to read some quotes in context before I comment.

It is brilliant how he winds them up. Anyone that does that is a great person 🙂

I do but it is here for a long time yet. It has been here for 5 years plus, and is not going to stop.
It would stop if the nationalists gave up on pushing for independence for a generation but they are not going to. It is their fault all the divisiveness so anyone that gets to them is a good person to me 🙂
