The Irish do it to be different from NI and she wanted to be different from England.

It’s used a little in my house as my wife is from the Western Isles.
Language is a beautiful thing. I have picked up a little Gaelic and I also have some Spanish as well as some conversational Mandarin from a 12 week course I did at the Confucius Institute at Glasgow Uni.
I also use some Quenya and Sindarin with my children and my dog also responds to some commands in these Elvish languages.

Now since the SNP came in they have given rebirth to our historical language.
The mountains of Scotland have Gaelic names with meanings .
It was also a language used in world war 2 because the Germans weren't able to work it out .
I'm sure the amount of speakers are now up to 60.000.
My loon who speaks Spanish also would like to learn our language because of his love of the Scottish mountains and scenery . -

Yep, the SNP/Shinner connection are good at weaponising languages for political purposes.
They could learn a thing or two from the strongly Unionist Welsh who are big on the language but don't use it to further their political aims. -

Any time I've heard Gaelic being spoken it sounds beautiful! I don't understand any of it, but part of me thinks I should, given my Arran and Skye heritage.
I suppose I differ from most people in that I view ethnicity/race as real, something intrinsically part of every human being, and this is the bedrock that produces a language. Whilst I'm not against people learning other languages that have manifested within a particular group, we shouldn't pretend that they belong to different groups. They ARE worth preserving though.
Gaelic is a language of the Gaels, it has never been spoken all over Scotland and is not Scotland's language, although the SNP, IMO, are trying to make out that this is the case.
The SNP's roadsign spending-spree is to the detriment of other languages which has been spoken in Scotland over the years too, including indigenous ones. To me, making out that it's Scotland's language trivialises the language itself.
That's my take on it anyway, and as usual I'm probably thinking about it far too deeply
Quite cool how you know a bit of Spanish, Pete. An ex of mine was working out in Gibralter a few years ago, and learnt a lot. I got into it a bit and still play the Learning Spanish game on the DS from time to time. It'd be handy to know IMO. -

Teach our kids French, German or Spanish which will be of use to them in later life. Not gaelic which imo is a complete waste of time and money.
