A great day after decades of hard work by children’s charities and advocates. Scotland now joins the other civilised nations around the world.
Hitting kids is evil, and it legitimises violence in the minds of children from an early age.
I look forward to the first prosecutions in order that those who persist will get the message.
A tap on the back of the hand or the erse never did me or my brother or sister any harm, and it happened once in a blue moon. We knew when it did happen that it was time to behave.

I’ve never hit my kids and they know how to behave. I was never hit either.
I know people who were and most of them struggle with it or struggle badly badly in life. If you allow a tap, then invariably it will lead to more for some children.
Hitting kids is evil. And it always was.

Pete, all I can do is laugh at this.😂
Battering a child until it's black and blue on a regular basis is evil. Tapping the back of their hand once in a blue moon when they refuse to behave is not. Try and see the difference, please.
our dad used to beat us to sleep with his belt, never did us any harm.
My dad belted, smacked and punched me like mad when I was a child.
I then made sure never to step inside a Chapel again.

Tapping a child on the back of the hand doesn’t make any sense. Of course it is not the same as injuring children but what is it supposed to do exactly?
For some reason I thought it had been banned for a while!
I was smacked as a wean, but hardly ever and not very hard. I've never really considered it to be a bad thing, but the wife and I spoke about it a while back and decided we'd never go down that route with the wee man.
I don't think it's evil, but then again I don't think it teaches the child respect either. It just seems to be a coping mechanism for the parent, which is fair enough I suppose but I think it sends out the wrong long-term message and reinforces violence as a good thing. In saying that, I do think violence can be good at times, for example I think it's OK to hit someone back if they hit you. This isn't the message given by smacking though.
Or if a Coyne-like character is viciously mocking the disabled, violence is sometimes necessary.
Like Peter, I know some who have been damaged by being smacked, although it was definitely to excess and often for no good reason.
In short, I support the ban. There are other ways to discipline.

Couldn’t agree more Comrade Hardliner.
Talking and explaining is far better.

The seps want to control everything about people’s lives.
Imagine having to hit a child to keep them right?
From a different time.
Kids learn respect from not being spoilt and guided in the right way, not from bring belted.
