The Nats are putting a lot of their faith on dodgy, loaded opinion polls, over a short 6 month period, at a time when you'd expect Sep support to be high anyway, before debates on the fundamentals of separation have even taken place. This is despite the opinion polls before the 2014 referendum being massively favourable to them compared to the final result.
There'll be no referendum under Alister Jack's watch, that's for sure.
Support for separation seems to have stagnated or nosedived depending on how you look at it anyway.
The last time we had the actual debate, support rose from 27% to 45%. We’re already above 50%.
So we have the undignified spectacle of unionist politicians running scared, stamping their feet, feigning indignance and seeking to avoid democracy.

You're above 50% according to opinion polls, with sample sizes of about 1000, loaded questions, with the undecideds stripped out (and these tend to fall to No), at a time before the fundamental issues have been debated, an incredibly unpopular Tory PM and emotions running high due to Brexit.
Again, the polls were way wrong before the last referendum, so why wouldn't they be now?
In January 2012, support for separation was between 32% and 38%, so getting to 45% (44.7 actually ;-) ) wasn't a hugely massive increase considering many people hadn't even thought about it before. Now, it's been on everybody's minds for ages.
We now have Nats, realising they blew their chance, clutching at every straw going, talking about every possible path to achieve their dream. Whether it be UDI, forcing a referendum through the courts or putting pressure on the government via spoofing opinion polls, it all seems morally sound to Nats. Unfortunately, to them, independence is the target and the end justifies the means, with doing what's right taking a back seat.
