As a wee boy I enjoyed learning about both Scottish and British history; I'd discovered these things called books you see.

Some people need spoon fed.

Aye like me because I can't read books it all gets too much for me .

Dyslexia isn't good but the rest of my family all read.

I need to be told stuff or shown how to do new things .

You're right enough, we shouldn't expect to learn about Scottish history in Scottish schools eh?  ;D

And you've done what about it?

I've done what about what?

Hee Haw.

What are you talking about?

We should be immensely proud of what Britain has achieved around the world.  The good FAR outweighs the bad.
That’s a bit like saying Saville wasn’t really so bad because he did a lot of charity work.

If it wasn't for the great deeds and civilising influence of Britain, the world would be a far worse place.

I don't think you can say the same for Jimmy Saville.

Arf.
Touché! 😆

That's right that's right .
Churchill.. Pakistan.. Iraq .. I will stop there for now.
Churchill was one of if not our greatest ever leader.
He was, but he was also one of the most evil and loathed.

Agree he was a great war leader that's for sure .

Back n the 60s I knew nothing about Scottish history .

Nothing about William Wallace.
Nothing about Robert the Bruce  etc etc etc.

Probably because schools only taught history from the British point of view. I mean we are the good guys, are we?

Are we?

That indeed was the case I left school illiterate of Scottish history.

I never did history at standard grade or higher but we did do a bit on Culloden, the Highland Clearances etc in 1st and 2nd year.

I keep meaning to visit the Culloden battlefield and visitors centre.

For information on the clearances I recommend Neil Oliver who has a firm grasp on the subject.

Past school I'm not really too interested in getting into it.

Scotland has played a big part in British history.

I know.

I'd like us to own our history, come to terms with it then at least we can move on from thinking that the British Empire is still a thing.

Lots of Nats bang on about the British Empire like it was the English Empire.
All to do with anglophobia.

Is it aye?

I know what Scotland was/is part of. I don't want to be a part of that.

And what’s that?
Perfidious Albion.

Which league do they play in?
The Lockheed Martin War Crimes Conference.

William Wallace was put to death in the most cruel way imaginable.

I was at Loudoun Hill yesterday and as I viewed the hill through the sculpture in his image, I gave him some thought. He carried out acts of incredible violence against English civilians and I have struggled to think of him as entirely a hero but I have settled on a view now.

We must judge a man not solely on his words and deeds but also with consideration to the context of his times. These were brutal times and Wallace was ruthless, but his heart was almost entirely good. A brave, brave person who has left his mark on history.

Betrayed ultimately by Scottish nobles due to his plan for a written Scottish Constitution in the common good, he is and remains a hero for the ages.

In all my years living in Ayrshire, I never once went to Loudoun Hill, to my shame.

William Wallace is someone I know very little about, other than him being able to kill men by the hundreds with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his arse.

Seriously though, it's mental what people did to each other back then.
